Before you travel, register with your own embassy. That's how you get security alerts and how they reach you in an emergency — the American, French, British and Canadian posts all run online registration.

If someone claiming to be police demands cash, keeps your passport or asks for an on-the-spot fine: insist on going to the nearest commissariat and call your embassy at the same time.

  • Never pay cash to someone who claims to be law enforcement
  • Keep the passport itself in a safe; carry a photocopy
  • Scan passport, insurance and vaccination certificate and keep them in the cloud

Health

Hôpitaux

Public referral hospitals

Abidjan's teaching hospitals (CHU) — Cocody, Treichville, Yopougon — are the top of the public system. For everyday problems a private clinic is faster and costs you out of pocket; for something serious you go up to a CHU or out of the country. Before choosing, check your insurer's list of network facilities.

Everyday apps

The ones people here use constantly. Install them and set up the accounts before you fly — you'll thank yourself on arrival day.

01

Yango

The go-to for taxis: locked price, tracked route, safer than hailing on the street. Heetch and inDrive are backups.

02

Wave / Orange Money

Mobile payments. Wave is cheapest, Orange has the widest network. Both cost nothing to install.

03

Jumia House / MeQasa

For flat hunting. Look at both, then compare with what the agency quotes you — you'll know where you stand.

04

Offline maps

Abidjan's road layout wasn't designed for newcomers. Download the map offline and save your home and office addresses.

05

Embassy / registration

Many embassies run an online registration system that pushes security alerts. Put the 24-hour consular number in your contacts.

06

Insurance card

Keep in your phone's photo album: insurance card, 24-hour emergency number, scans of your passport and vaccination certificate. Reachable with no signal.

FAQ

FAQ

Can a foreigner buy property here?
Yes, but land is a maze. Customary land and formal title (titre foncier) coexist, and disputes are common. Confirm there's a real title deed, have a local notary run the checks, and if all you're shown is a handwritten note, walk away.
Can I stay long term without a work contract?
Not really. There's no retirement visa and no digital nomad visa — long stays run through work, study or family. Past three months you need the residence card; overstay and you're looking at fines, and at worst being asked to leave.
How many months' deposit is legal?
In practice two to three months, and that's custom rather than a hard legal cap, which means it's negotiable. The agent usually takes another month's rent (or around 10% split between the parties). Get a receipt for every payment and put the refund terms and timing in the lease.
What does healthcare cost in Abidjan?
A private clinic consultation is manageable, but hospital stays and surgery climb fast, and a serious case needs evacuation to Europe or South Africa — expensive enough to break a household. That's why evacuation cover is non-optional. Residents lean on the CMU scheme and top it up as needed.
Which mobile money is best value?
Wave caps withdrawals and transfers at 1%, has the highest per-transaction limit (around 5 million XOF) and charges merchants 1% — the cheapest right now. Orange Money and MTN MoMo sit at 1.5–2% but have denser networks. Use Wave as your main and keep Orange Money as a backup.
What licences does a small restaurant need?
Register with CEPICI for the IDU first, then the sector licences: food service and handling, possibly an alcohol licence, hygiene and environmental requirements, and a terrace permit. The exact list is searchable by sector in CEPICI's e-Licences database.
How bad is cybersecurity here?
The country is among the most exposed in Africa. Phishing, CEO-fraud and mobile money scams are all active. Turn on two-factor authentication, make transfers a two-person check, and never hand your phone to someone to run a payment.
Will the prices on this site go stale?
They will. Every amount, rate and timeline here comes from public sources and moves with policy and markets. Before you commit, check with CEPICI, the DGI, ONECI or a local lawyer. The calculators are for budgeting, not for signing anything.
Can you get by in Abidjan without French?
For a few days, just about. Long term, it grinds you down: counters, contracts and bills are all in French, and English only works in international hotels and big companies. A few dozen everyday phrases changes both your efficiency and the prices you get quoted.
Can I bring my pet?
Yes, but prepare: rabies vaccination, microchip, an official veterinary health certificate, and sometimes an import permit. Book the airline's pet space early. Check the details with the airline and your embassy before you fly, not at the border.
A police officer stops me and asks for money. What do I do?
Stay calm, ask to see identification, then insist on handling it at the nearest police station. Real officers don't take cash on the street. Don't hand over money, don't get into a vehicle, and call your embassy as soon as you can. Carry copies — never the original passport.
How common are power and water cuts?
They happen, without being an everyday thing. But before you rent, ask: is there a backup generator, how is the cost shared, is there water storage? Get it written into the lease. It's more common further out — better to know before you commit.

Language

By your nationality

This block is written for you, not translated: Chinese nationals get consular services and the local community, French nationals get registration and the CFE, English readers get the Anglophone posts and the fact that counters work in French.

For English-speaking residents: the American, British and other Anglophone posts in Abidjan handle notarisation, emergency travel documents and citizen services, and most keep a list of vetted doctors and lawyers. Register with your embassy on arrival — it makes contact much faster if something goes wrong. Note that almost every administrative counter works in French, so bring a French-speaking colleague or fixer to anything involving a lease, a land title or a tax filing.
